Niger Governor’s Wife Donates N50 Million to Flood Victims in Mokwa

Hajiya Fatima Bago visits flood-ravaged Mokwa communities, offers financial relief and urges residents to avoid building on waterways.

The wife of the Niger State Governor, Hajiya Fatima Bago, has extended her support to victims of the recent Mokwa flood disaster, donating N50 million to assist affected families.

During her visit to Mokwa Local Government Area, Hajiya Fatima expressed sympathy over the tragic incident and said the financial aid was a personal donation from her and her family, aimed at cushioning the effects of the flood.

“We are here to console victims of the flood disaster and to assess the situation. The flooding has happened, and from what we saw, it is really not exciting to behold,” she said.

Cautions Against Building on Waterways
While sympathizing with victims, the governor’s wife cautioned residents against constructing homes on waterways, urging them to adopt safer building practices to prevent future disasters.

She acknowledged the ongoing distribution of relief materials being handled by local authorities and community leaders and praised their swift response to the crisis.

Search and Rescue Efforts Ongoing
Hajiya Fatima also noted that rescue operations are ongoing, with excavators being deployed to recover more bodies from the debris.

Community Leaders Appreciate Support
The Village Head of Mokwa, Alhaji Mohammed Aliyu, thanked the governor’s wife for the visit and called on the state government to compensate affected residents.

Also speaking, Alhaji Abubakar Usman, Secretary to the State Government, urged victims to remain strong, describing the flood as an “act of God.”

In solidarity, Mrs. Afiniki Dauda, Deputy Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, and Hajiya Mairo Mann, Permanent Secretary, Ministry for Humanitarian Affairs, also visited the victims and offered their condolences.
