Musk Returns to Trump Administration Role as Pentagon Launches Future Warfare Study
Tech billionaire Elon Musk is returning to an official advisory role within the Donald Trump administration after being selected to co-lead a new Pentagon initiative examining how warfare could evolve in the coming decades.
The initiative, known as Project Meridian, was unveiled by U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth during a State of the Force address at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia.
Musk will lead the 120-day project alongside Palmer Luckey, co-founder of defence technology company Anduril Industries, and former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich.
The team will operate under the direction of Pentagon technology chief Emil Michael and will draw on specialists from the technology, academic, business, policy and national security sectors.
Project Meridian is expected to assess the emerging technologies and military capabilities that could shape future conflicts, including artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, robotics and other advanced technologies. Its scope will cover potential battlefields ranging from underground environments to operations beyond Earth.
The project has been given 120 days to complete its assessment, with its findings expected to be presented through a public report accompanied by a classified annex.
The Pentagon says the exercise is intended to identify technologies that could be developed, tested and deployed to prepare U.S. forces for future conflicts.
Musk’s appointment marks his first formal government role since he left the Department of Government Efficiency in May 2025. He had previously been closely associated with Trump’s administration before a highly publicised dispute between the two men following Musk’s departure.
The billionaire initially played a prominent role in Trump’s return to the White House and led DOGE, the administration’s cost-cutting initiative. Their relationship later deteriorated publicly, although Musk has since moved closer to the administration again.
His return also places him at the centre of a Pentagon project with significant relevance to his existing businesses. SpaceX, which Musk leads, is a major U.S. government launch and satellite contractor, while his broader technology interests include artificial intelligence and autonomous systems.
Luckey’s participation similarly brings extensive experience in defence technology. His company, Anduril Industries, develops autonomous systems, drones and other military technologies and has secured contracts with the U.S. government. Gingrich, meanwhile, brings his experience as a former Republican congressional leader and long-standing involvement in national security debates.
The Pentagon has also announced the creation of an Autonomous Warfare Command, aimed at accelerating the development and deployment of drones, robotics and other autonomous military systems.
Together, the initiatives signal a stronger Pentagon focus on emerging technologies as the United States prepares for potential changes in the character of future warfare.
Project Meridian’s findings are expected to provide recommendations on the capabilities the U.S. military may need to develop and deploy as technology continues to reshape modern battlefields.
