Meta Sues AI Firm Behind ‘Nudify’ Apps Amid Surge in Deepfake Abuse
Meta has initiated legal action against Hong Kong-based Joy Timeline HK Limited, the operator of the AI-powered “nudify” app CrushAI, for promoting non-consensual explicit imagery through advertisements on its platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and Threads.
The lawsuit, filed in Hong Kong, alleges that Joy Timeline circumvented Meta’s ad review processes to repeatedly advertise its services, which allow users to digitally alter images to create sexually explicit content without consent.
This legal action follows a CBS News investigation revealing that approximately 90% of CrushAI’s traffic originated from ads placed on Meta platforms, raising concerns among lawmakers and privacy advocates.
In response, Meta has committed to enhancing its detection technology to identify and block such content more effectively.
The proliferation of AI-generated non-consensual intimate imagery has led to significant emotional and psychological harm for victims, particularly women and minors. Advocates are urging for stronger legal frameworks and platform accountability to combat this growing issue
