Nigeria’s 2027 general elections could face serious challenges from insecurity and political violence, with the International Republican Institute (IRI), warning that both remain major threats to the electoral process.
The institute said the security situation in parts of the country could discourage voter participation and undermine confidence in the polls.
It also expressed concern over the possibility of voter intimidation, hate speech and inflammatory rhetoric escalating tensions among political parties and their supporters.
The IRI urged political parties and candidates to commit to peaceful campaigns and avoid actions capable of triggering violence before, during and after the elections.
It called on security agencies to strengthen preparations for the polls and protect voters, candidates, election officials and other stakeholders.
The institute also stressed the need for stronger collaboration among the Independent National Electoral Commission, security agencies, political parties and civil society organisations to address emerging threats.
It urged authorities to ensure that perpetrators of electoral violence are held accountable, while encouraging political actors to resolve disputes through lawful and peaceful channels.
The IRI said sustained commitment to peaceful participation, credible institutions and respect for democratic principles would be essential to ensuring successful 2027 elections.
