Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has pledged intensified efforts to address the recent killings in Plateau State, while advocating stronger security measures to unlock the potential of Nigeria’s growing creative economy.
Disu made the commitment during a visit to Plateau State, where he first addressed participants of Senior Executive Course 48, 2026, at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS, Kuru.
Speaking on the theme, “The Orange Economy and Entrepreneurship for Sustainable Development in Nigeria: The Role of the Nigeria Police Force,” the IGP highlighted the growing connection between security, entrepreneurship, intellectual property and the creative industries.
He said effective policing must extend beyond traditional crime fighting to protecting the businesses, intellectual property and digital platforms that sustain Nigeria’s creative sector, including music, film, fashion and other forms of cultural enterprise.
To strengthen this protection, Disu proposed an Orange Economy Security and Intellectual Property Coordination Desk within an existing structure of the Nigeria Police Force.
The proposed desk, he said, would provide specialised policing, improve reporting channels and deepen collaboration between law enforcement agencies and stakeholders in the creative industry.
The IGP also called for a more intelligence-driven response to piracy, counterfeiting, cyber-enabled fraud and other criminal activities threatening creative businesses.
He emphasised closer cooperation between the Police, the Nigerian Copyright Commission and other relevant institutions, as well as stronger capacity to investigate cybercrime and preserve digital evidence.
Beyond the creative sector, Disu stressed the importance of protecting Nigeria’s night-time economy, noting that businesses operating after dark require adequate security to operate safely and contribute to economic activity.
He also linked employment and legitimate opportunities for young Nigerians to crime prevention, saying the ability to turn creative talents into sustainable livelihoods could help reduce vulnerability to criminal networks.
From NIPSS, the IGP proceeded to the Plateau State Government House in Jos, where he met with Deputy Governor Josephine Piyo to review the security situation, with particular attention to the recent killings in Mangu.
Disu disclosed that arrests had already been made in connection with the violence and said increased cooperation from residents had helped investigators make progress.
He assured the state government that the Police would continue working with local authorities and other stakeholders to pursue those responsible and restore confidence in affected communities.
Receiving the IGP on behalf of Governor Caleb Mutfwang, Deputy Governor Josephine Piyo welcomed the visit and commended ongoing efforts by the Police Command to improve security across the state.
Piyo pointed to measures introduced by the state government, including a security control centre in Jos, while requesting the reactivation of the Mobile Police barracks in Gashish and increased police deployment to Barkin Ladi, Riyom and Bokkos.
She said a stronger security presence in vulnerable communities would provide reassurance to residents and reinforce efforts to contain the violence.
The IGP’s engagements in Plateau therefore combined an immediate response to the state’s security challenges with a broader call for policing that protects investment, creativity and legitimate economic activity across Nigeria.
