Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has acknowledged that he came close to losing his job following a disappointing 2024/25 campaign.
Speaking after City’s commanding 4-0 victory over Wolves in their 2025/26 Premier League opener, Guardiola credited his continued role at the club to the strong backing he receives from the club’s hierarchy.
City are aiming for a more successful season after underwhelming performances last term. They finished third in the league, suffered a loss to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final, and crashed out of the EFL Cup in the fourth round. Their Champions League journey also ended early, with elimination in the round of 16 at the hands of Real Madrid.
Reflecting on the challenges of the previous season, Guardiola told TNT Sports:
“I’m really pleased to sit here after a bad season.
If I didn’t have my chairman and sporting director like I have, I would have been sacked, definitely. Because the results were really, really poor.”
