Google, Australia’s AAP Seal AI Content Deal for Gemini
In a new development, Google has struck a partnership with Australian Associated Press (AAP) to supply content that will enhance the performance of its generative AI model, Gemini, the two organisations announced on Tuesday.
While financial details were not disclosed, the agreement will allow Gemini to draw on AAP’s trusted news reporting to deliver more timely and accurate responses to users.
“This deal will help provide real-time information to enhance responses in the Gemini app,” said Nic Hopkins, Google’s Head of News Partnerships for Australia and New Zealand.
Founded more than 90 years ago, AAP is the country’s national newswire service. Its Chief Executive, Emma Cowdroy, described the agreement as a recognition of AAP’s credibility and reliability. “This is a strong endorsement of our reputation as a leading and trusted news media organisation,” she said.
The deal highlights a growing wave of collaborations between news outlets and AI companies, as technology firms race to ensure their natural-language models produce relevant, fact-based responses.
In January, French newswire AFP signed an agreement with AI startup Mistral, allowing its chatbot to access AFP’s reporting. At the same time, some news organisations have chosen a different path, pursuing legal action over the use of their copyrighted content in AI systems.
Google’s partnership with AAP positions the newswire as a key player in shaping the accuracy and timeliness of AI-powered information delivery in Australia and beyond.
