The FGN Power Company (FGNPC) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s technical capacity and fostering innovation in the power sector through its support for the Visiola Foundation’s 2026 STEM Summer Camp.
The week-long programme, which culminated in a closing competition in Abuja, gave young participants practical exposure to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), with students designing and building renewable energy prototypes to address real-world challenges.
The projects were evaluated on technical understanding, creativity, quality of presentation, usefulness and potential impact. FGNPC’s Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Kenny Anuwe, served as Chief Judge at the closing competition.
Speaking at the event, Anuwe stressed the importance of investing in young Nigerians to build the technical expertise required to transform the country’s power sector.
“The Federal Government cannot build the power sector alone; it requires the support of key public and private sector partners,” he said.
He noted that FGNPC remains open to partnerships with organisations such as the Visiola Foundation, which create opportunities for capacity building and youth development.
According to him, the company’s commitment to developing technical capacity is also reflected in initiatives such as the Siemens Energy Education & Development (SEED) programme and the Power Training Institute (PTI) workstream, which are designed to strengthen engineers’ capabilities in power system simulation, network studies and system planning.
Anuwe added that the private sector, non-governmental organisations and financiers all have important roles to play in addressing Nigeria’s power-sector challenges.
“FGNPC will continue to collaborate with organisations like the Visiola Foundation, and we commend the meaningful work and impact they have delivered over the years,” he said.
The students participating in the camp were challenged to identify renewable energy problems, develop functional solutions, explain the technologies behind their prototypes and demonstrate the potential impact of their ideas.
FGNPC commended the Visiola Foundation for creating a platform that enables young Nigerians to apply STEM knowledge to practical challenges while encouraging creativity, problem-solving and innovation.
The company said early investment in STEM education is essential to developing a pipeline of engineers, scientists, innovators and energy professionals capable of supporting Nigeria’s energy transition and contributing to a more reliable, sustainable and efficient power sector.
The Visiola Foundation, a non-profit organisation focused on educating, training and mentoring African girls and young women from underserved communities, has trained more than 24,000 girls over the past 13 years through STEM camps, after-school STEM clubs in government secondary schools and intensive coding boot camps for young women.
Through these programmes, the foundation seeks to close the gender gap in STEM by equipping African girls and women with technical skills, professional confidence and industry connections needed to become engineers, innovators and leaders.
