Students in several state-owned universities across Nigeria are facing disruptions to academic activities as lecturers under the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, withdraw their services over unresolved demands for salary implementation and payment of outstanding arrears.
The industrial action follows the union’s insistence on the implementation of the 2009 Re-negotiated Agreement and the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement, as well as payment of arrears dating back to January 2026.
The affected institutions include universities in Plateau, Ondo, Edo, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, Taraba, Nasarawa, Abia, Enugu, Imo and Bayelsa States.
At Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, ASUU said it would not suspend the strike until the state government implements the new salary structure and pays outstanding arrears from January 2026.
The branch chairman, Professor Bolu Oshodi, said the union would only call off the action after members receive the payments.
“We will call off the strike when we receive alert in our bank accounts. Alert of the implementation and the arrears starting from January, that is when we will suspend the strike”, he said.
At Plateau State University, Bokkos, ASUU declared a total and indefinite strike over unresolved demands, including implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement, payment of arrears, commencement of the Contributory Pension Scheme and improved staff security.
Academic activities were also disrupted at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, where the union cited non-implementation of the agreement and unpaid allowances from January 2026.
The branch said the action followed the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum and covers teaching, examinations, statutory meetings and supervision of students’ academic work.
