China slaps anti-dumping duties on plastic imports from U.S., EU, Japan

China has imposed anti-dumping duties of up to 75% on certain plastic imports from the United States, European Union, Taiwan, and Japan, following an investigation into alleged dumping practices, its Ministry of Commerce announced on Monday.

The new tariffs specifically target imports of polyformaldehyde copolymer a widely used plastic found in automotive parts, medical equipment, and household appliances. According to the ministry, the duties will range from 3.8% to 74.9% and took effect on Monday.

This move comes just days after the U.S. and China agreed to a temporary 90-day reduction in wide-ranging tariffs on each other’s goods, marking a brief pause in an ongoing trade conflict that has disrupted global markets and supply chains.

China has a history of launching anti-dumping investigations against countries involved in broader trade disputes.

In a similar move earlier this year, Beijing imposed tariffs on EU brandy, dealing a blow to France’s export-driven cognac industry.
