The family of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed heartfelt appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, government officials, world leaders, and Nigerians at large for their support following Buhari’s passing.
In a statement signed by presidential spokesperson Garba Shehu on Sunday, Malam Mamman Daura, the eldest member of the Buhari family, said the show of love and solidarity from within and outside Nigeria helped the family bear the pain of their loss.
“All of Nigeria showed up to honour Buhari, comfort us, and pray for him. We truly appreciate all the visits, messages, and prayers,” the statement read.
The family extended special thanks to President Tinubu for declaring a public holiday in Buhari’s honour and renaming the University of Maiduguri after the late leader.
Vice President Kashim Shettima was also acknowledged for attending the burial in Daura and visiting the bereaved family in the United Kingdom.
“Our thanks also go to leaders of other countries, including King Charles III, the UN Secretary-General, and ECOWAS leaders, for sending condolences and showing solidarity,” the family noted.
They also appreciated the sympathy shown by governors, traditional and religious figures, business leaders, politicians, civil society groups, and everyday Nigerians who reached out or paid their respects.
Describing Buhari’s death as an “irreparable loss,” the family said the national and international response provided much-needed strength and comfort.
“The general reaction and kind expressions give us the strength to cope with the loss of our esteemed family member and former leader of the country,” the statement added.
They noted that the turnout and support from people of all religions, ethnic groups, and political affiliations had deeply moved them.
“The love shown by Nigerians at home and abroad during this mourning period was both overwhelming and reassuring,” the family said, praying that God blesses all who stood with them during their time of grief.
