President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has awarded Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft and co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the prestigious Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) one of Nigeria’s highest national honours.
The award was presented on Tuesday in Lagos, as Gates arrived in the country for high-level engagements focused on public health, innovation, and development.
The ceremony was attended by key dignitaries, including billionaire industrialist Aliko Dangote, reflecting the significance of the occasion.
Gates is visiting Nigeria to strengthen collaborations on primary healthcare reform, digital innovation, and artificial intelligence.
According to the Gates Foundation, the trip includes meetings with national and state-level leaders, local researchers, and innovators. He will also participate in the Goalkeepers Nigeria event, spotlighting Africa’s potential in shaping the future of global development.
“This visit underscores our long-term commitment to supporting African solutions for African challenges,” the Foundation noted, referencing its expanding presence across the continent — with offices in Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Senegal, and Ethiopia.
Gates’ visit follows a landmark announcement in May, in which the Gates Foundation pledged $200 billion over 20 years toward advancing global health and development — part of Gates’ broader promise to donate nearly all of his personal wealth to philanthropy.
