‘Agbara Nla’ Crosses ₦354m, Claims Top Spot at Nigerian Box Office

Nollywood faith-based film Agbara Nla has grossed ₦354.5 million at the Nigerian box office since its cinema release on October 1, according to its distributor, Nile Entertainment.

The remake of the 33-year-old Christian film classic produced by Mount Zion has also recorded an opening-weekend gross of $120,660 in selected cinemas in the United Kingdom and Canada.

Co-produced by Mount Zion Film Productions, Sozo Films and Circuits, the film was distributed internationally in Europe in partnership with IFEC.

Nile Entertainment announced the figures in a statement on Tuesday, revealing that three films in its distribution portfolio occupied the top three positions at the Nigerian weekend box office.

Agbara Nla led with ₦47.50 million, followed by Street Fighter, which earned ₦36.43 million, and The Other Mummy, which grossed ₦8.67 million.

Together, the three films generated ₦92.61 million, accounting for 58.9 per cent of the weekend’s total box office revenue. The distributor said its entire slate contributed 68 per cent of the weekend’s earnings.

Nostalgia campaign boosts ‘Agbara Nla’

Nile Entertainment attributed Agbara Nla’s performance to a promotional campaign that drew on the original film’s legacy while seeking to attract younger audiences.

According to the distributor, the campaign involved engagement with the Mount Zion community, endorsements from church leaders and online promotional activities.

The company said these efforts generated more than ₦71 million in advance ticket sales in a single day.

It also reported several milestones for the film in the UK, describing it as the biggest Nollywood release of 2026, the biggest opening weekend for a Nollywood film, the biggest pre-sales for a Nollywood title and the biggest-ever faith-based Nollywood film.

Distributor highlights strategy behind box office performance

Nile Entertainment said Street Fighter and The Other Mummy, both released in Nigerian cinemas on October 16, received marketing campaigns tailored to their respective genres and audiences.

The distributor said the contrast between the films’ promotional approaches reflected its strategy of matching campaigns to the productions and the audiences they seek to reach.

The company’s General Manager, Nowe Segun-Ojo, said the performance of the three titles marked an encouraging development for the distributor, which began operations in August 2024.

“Since commencing operations in August 2024, we have focused on building a distribution business that understands the films it represents and the audiences they serve,” Segun-Ojo said.

He added that the results reflected the different audience engagement strategies used for each release.

“Having three of our titles occupy the top three positions is an encouraging milestone for a relatively young company, and we remain focused on building on this progress with our production and studio partners,” he said.
