Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has strongly condemned the declaration of a State of Emergency in Rivers State. He also revealed that governors elected under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) will challenge the declaration in court.
Makinde stated that the decision to pursue legal action was made during an emergency meeting of PDP governors held on Wednesday. He praised the party for demonstrating what he called “the necessary strength and leadership” in the face of the crisis.
This follows President Bola Tinubu’s announcement on Tuesday, declaring a State of Emergency in Rivers State, which involved the suspension of Governor Similayi Fubara, his Deputy Ngozi Odu, and the State House of Assembly for six months. The President also appointed Vice Admiral Ibok Ibas (Rtd.) as Sole Administrator for the state.
In his biweekly newsletter, The Business of Governance Issue 110, Governor Makinde condemned the suspension of democracy in Rivers State, describing the move as illegal and urging all well-meaning Nigerians to denounce it. He said, “I stand today to say that the declaration of the State of Emergency in Rivers State and the suspension of the executive and legislative arms of government by the presidency is an illegality that right-thinking members of society must oppose.”
Makinde emphasized the importance of upholding democratic principles, stating, “Our democratic tenets must never be trifled with, no matter our personal feelings and loyalties. This is the time to take a stand for fairness, equity, and justice.”
He further urged Nigerians to stand up for what is right, even if it means standing alone, as the country’s democracy matures.
