Mateta handed three-match ban after Crystal Palace lose red-card appeal

Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta has been handed a three-game suspension after the club failed to overturn his dismissal during Saturday’s Premier League loss to Tottenham Hotspur.

The France international was shown a red card by referee Michael Oliver following a challenge on Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven, 13 minutes into the encounter.

Oliver initially cautioned Mateta with a yellow card but upgraded it to a straight red after consulting the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

Palace subsequently appealed the decision, insisting the contact was accidental, but the challenge was rejected.

According to reports on Wednesday, the 29-year-old will sit out Sunday’s visit to Liverpool, the away clash with Coventry City on November 21 and Palace’s home fixture against Hull City on November 29.

Mateta reportedly argued that he was focused on the ball and did not see Van de Ven before making contact with the defender’s ankle.

However, the suspension will not affect his availability for Palace’s Europa League matches against Hoffenheim on Thursday and Real Sociedad on November 26.
