Lagos extends financial aid, healthcare to elderly caregivers

The Lagos State Government has provided financial assistance and free healthcare services to older persons living with disabilities and elderly parents caring for children with disabilities.

The support was delivered through the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs at the 2026 Older Persons with Disabilities and Elderly Caregivers Support Programme, held at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The initiative targeted two vulnerable groups: older persons living with disabilities and ageing parents who continue to care for children with disabilities despite the challenges of old age.

LASODA General Manager, Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, said the programme was designed to address the needs of groups whose welfare is often overlooked, under the theme, “Ageing with Dignity.”

Beneficiaries received financial support and free medical services, including dental screening, consultations, scaling and polishing, blood pressure checks and basic medications. Health education sessions also focused on ageing-related challenges and hypertension management.

Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, said the government remained committed to ensuring that older persons and people living with disabilities enjoy dignity, care and inclusion in society.

One of the beneficiaries, 75-year-old Eyitayo Aridegbe, expressed appreciation for the intervention, saying it was the first time he had received dental screening, scaling and polishing in his lifetime.
