2027 Elections: CAN Distances Itself from Political Mobilisation, Reaffirms Neutrality

With political activities gradually gathering momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has moved to protect its identity, warning individuals and groups against using its name to promote political interests without authorisation.

The association made the clarification while reaffirming its commitment to political neutrality, following concerns over the activities of Archbishop Chivir Chianson and a group he reportedly represents.

In a statement signed by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN said Chianson was neither its General Secretary nor authorised to speak or act on its behalf.

It also disowned the group associated with him, stressing that it had no official affiliation or working relationship with the Christian body.

CAN said neither Chianson nor his group had received its approval to organise or promote any political campaign or mobilise support for a candidate in the association’s name.

The Christian umbrella body warned that any political endorsement or activity linked to the individual or his group should not be regarded as its official position.

While acknowledging its responsibility to defend the interests of Christians and contribute to national development, CAN said it would not allow unauthorised individuals to exploit its identity for political or personal gain.

The association further stressed that its approach to national issues would remain objective, with its engagement focused on holding political leaders accountable regardless of party affiliation.

It maintained that it would neither endorse political parties nor mobilise support for candidates as the country approaches the 2027 elections.

CAN also urged Christians, members of the public and media organisations to disregard claims that Chianson or his group officially represent the association.

It specifically called on TVC News and other media outlets to verify the credentials and institutional affiliations of individuals presented as its representatives.

The association added that it would take appropriate steps to safeguard its name, identity and institutional integrity against unauthorised use and misrepresentation.
