Kemi Afolabi Hits Back at Those Who Say She ‘Doesn’t Look Sick’

Nollywood actress Kemi Afolabi has pushed back against people who question the severity of her health condition because she does not appear visibly ill.

The actress, who has publicly spoken about living with lupus, addressed the comments in a social media post while reflecting on the physical and emotional toll of her health journey.

Afolabi said people who have never experienced the uncertainty that comes with a serious health condition may not understand what she goes through.

She recalled having to endure difficult situations quietly over the years in an attempt to maintain peace, but said she has decided to speak up more about her experiences.

According to the actress, she has been told by medical professionals that suppressing emotions and trauma has contributed to challenges associated with her condition. She linked this, based on what she said she had been medically informed, to inflammation and recurring lupus flares.

Afolabi said her experiences have strengthened her resolve to advocate for herself and others living with health conditions that may not always be obvious to people around them.

She particularly objected to comments suggesting that she cannot be seriously ill because she does not “look sick.”

“I will be doing more of speaking up and advocating for myself and many other warriors chasing their health to be able to function like a normal human being while they chase their dreams,” she wrote.

The actress added that her experience has made such comments particularly difficult for her.

“If you’ve never gone to bed wondering if you’re gonna wake up the next day because of how your body is doing, please don’t ever tell me, ‘But you don’t look sick’,” she said.

Afolabi also said she no longer intends to suppress her feelings simply to preserve relationships or avoid conflict.

She maintained that she has nothing to prove to people questioning her health and urged others to avoid judging someone’s condition solely by their appearance.

“I have stomached and handled so many things I am not pleased with maturely in the past for the sake of peace. I will no longer be doing that,” she said.

The actress, who has been open about her lupus journey for several years, has previously spoken about the impact of the condition on her life and career. In August 2026, she also disclosed that a severe lupus flare had resulted in multiple surgeries during the year.

Her latest comments come days after another social media post in which she reflected on the fears and trauma she has experienced, while expressing gratitude for the resilience she has found through the difficult period.
