Presidential spokesperso,n Bay ,Onanuga, has described the ongoing US court matter involving President Bola Tinubu as a “civil records-disclosure dispute” under the U.S. Freedom of Information Act.
Onanuga said no court had found Tinubu guilty of any criminal wrongdoing, accusing opposition figures of misrepresenting the matter.
“The matter is a civil records-disclosure dispute under the United States Freedom of Information Act. It is not a criminal case against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, nor has the court found him guilty of any criminal wrongdoing”, Onanuga said.
The comments come after the FBI submitted 399 pages of records linked to a 1993 investigation involving Tinubu to a federal judge in Washington, D.C.
The documents were filed under seal and are being reviewed privately by Judge Beryl Howell.
The case stems from FOIA requests seeking records related to Tinubu and Abiodun Agbele. The FBI and DEA have redacted portions of the documents, citing exemptions under US law.
The dispute also involves the forfeiture of $460,000 by Tinubu to the US government in 1993.
The Presidency maintains that the court will determine whether additional records can be released.
