U.S. and South Korea Scale Back Joint Military Drills After Trump Directive

The United States and South Korea have significantly scaled back their annual joint military exercises following US President Donald Trump’s directive to reduce the scope of the drills, bringing the allies’ latest show of military readiness to an unexpectedly early end.

The Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS) exercise, which began on August 17, will now run for just five days and conclude on August 21, instead of continuing through August 27 as initially planned. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the shortened schedule was agreed following a proposal from Washington.

The allies have also reduced a number of combined field manoeuvres, with some live-training activities cancelled or replaced by computer simulations. South Korean media reported that the second phase of the exercise, which was expected to focus on counteroffensive operations following an initial defensive phase, would be dropped.

Despite the cuts, US defence officials said the revised exercise would retain its essential readiness and training objectives. The Pentagon has maintained that the changes would not undermine the core goals of US military training.

The decision comes amid renewed diplomatic signals from Washington toward North Korea and has raised questions about the future direction of the US-South Korea security alliance. Analysts have warned that repeated reductions in large-scale exercises could affect allied preparedness, even as Seoul and Washington continue to insist that their core defence capabilities remain intact.

North Korea has strongly opposed the exercises, describing the joint drills as a threat, while Washington and Seoul have continued to frame them as essential to maintaining military readiness on the Korean Peninsula.
