Nigerian gospel singer Esther Igbekele is mourning the death of her mother, Mary Amope Igbekele (JP).
The singer announced the death in an emotional Instagram post on Friday, expressing her pain over the loss.
Esther wrote, “AND MY MOTHER DIED. Death, you took my GOLD away.”
The announcement has prompted an outpouring of condolences from fans, colleagues and well-wishers, who have offered messages of sympathy to the singer and her family.
The loss comes shortly after the family celebrated Mary Amope’s 70th birthday and wedding anniversary, making the development particularly poignant for those close to the family.
Esther, popularly known as the Duchess of Gospel Music, began her music career in 1996 and has built a career in gospel music over the years.
She has released several gospel projects and performed at Christian music events in Nigeria and internationally, including appearances in the United States and the United Kingdom.
The singer has not disclosed the circumstances surrounding her mother’s death.
She has also yet to announce details of the funeral arrangements.
