Don Jazzy Urges Record Label Bosses to Show Artists Respect From Day One

Music executive and Mavin Records founder Don Jazzy has weighed in on record label dynamics, warning that a lack of respect for artists remains a major issue within the music industry.
In a post shared on X, the veteran producer advised emerging label owners to treat their artists like superstars from the very beginning, especially if their goal is to build globally successful acts.
According to Don Jazzy, respect and empowerment are critical foundations for long-term success, noting that artists thrive best when they are allowed to take centre stage.
He explained that his own management style prioritises giving artists room to shine, while he plays a supportive role behind the scenes unless his involvement is necessary.
Don Jazzy added that while many new label bosses look up to him as a role model, some misunderstand his approach by focusing on his public persona rather than his leadership philosophy.
“I might be wrong, but I’ve noticed some record label bosses don’t respect their artists,” he wrote. “If you are aiming to build a huge superstar, start from day one to accord them that respect.”
He further noted that his “Don” persona is often misinterpreted, stressing that authority does not equate to dominance over talent.
“Most new label bosses look up to me but copy the wrong thing because of my Don persona,” he said. “Ninety per cent of the time around my artists, I let them be the superstars they are. It’s only ten per cent of the time that I really need to be supremos.”
The music mogul emphasised that nurturing talent, rather than trying to control it, is essential for creativity, growth, and sustainability in the industry.
His comments have sparked conversations online about leadership, artist welfare, and the evolving relationship between record labels and performers in Nigeria’s fast-growing Afrobeats scene.
