FG Pays ₦8.6bn Pension Arrears to Over 148,000 Retirees Under 2024 Increment

The Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) has disbursed ₦8.6 billion as part of the arrears from the ₦32,000 minimum pension increment approved by President Bola Tinubu in 2024.

In a statement released Monday and signed by Olugbenga Ajayi, PTAD’s Head of Corporate Communications, the agency confirmed that the latest instalment has been fully paid to 148,625 eligible pensioners under the Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS).

Beneficiaries include retirees from the Civil Service, Police, Parastatals, and the Customs, Immigration and Prisons (now Correctional Service) pension departments.

“The Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate has finalised the payment of another instalment of pension arrears arising from the ₦32,000 increment approved by President Bola Tinubu in 2024,” the statement said.

Payment Breakdown by Department

  • 5.7 billion was disbursed to 59,342 pensioners under the Parastatals Pensions Department.
  • 2.3 billion went to 71,084 retirees under the Civil Service Pensions Department.
  • 310 million was paid to 9,579 pensioners in the Police Pensions Department.
  • 276 million was allocated to 8,620 retirees from the Customs, Immigration and Prisons Pensions Department.

PTAD’s Executive Secretary, Tolulope Odunaiya, described the payments as part of the Federal Government’s ongoing commitment to ensure pensioners receive their rightful entitlements.

“This latest payment is a further demonstration of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and commitment to the welfare of our senior citizens,” Odunaiya stated.

She added that the government remains determined to clear all outstanding arrears related to pension adjustments and ensure pensioners under the DBS enjoy a dignified retirement.

Earlier this year, PTAD had fully settled arrears from the first tranche of pension adjustments (20% and 28%) approved by the President and implemented from January 2024.
