Over 273,000 Syrian Refugees Return Home from Turkey

Since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December 2024, more than 273,000 Syrian refugees have voluntarily returned to their homeland from Turkey, according to Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz, as reported by Anadolu Agency.

This marks a significant shift in migration patterns following over a decade of civil war that displaced millions.

Turkey, which has hosted approximately 3 million Syrian refugees, continues to facilitate these returns through expanded border processing capacities and a streamlined appointment system.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced that daily border crossing capacity has increased from 3,020 to around 19,000, allowing for more efficient processing of returnees.

While the return of refugees is seen as a positive development, challenges remain. Many returnees face a harsh reality in a war-torn homeland, with limited access to essential services and infrastructure.

The Refugees Association in Turkey reports growing dissatisfaction among returnees, with many struggling due to a lack of education, healthcare, and economic stability.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has emphasized the need for international support to ensure safe and sustainable conditions for returnees.

UNHCR has called for $310 million to assist up to a million Syrians who might return in the first half of 2025, highlighting the importance of rebuilding efforts and the involvement of returnees in the reconstruction of the country.

As the situation evolves, Turkey remains committed to supporting the voluntary and safe return of Syrian refugees, while also addressing the challenges that come with reintegration and rebuilding efforts in Syria.
