Nollywood Actor Kalu Ikeagwu Shares How He Escaped a Toxic Relationship

Nollywood actor Kalu Ikeagwu has opened up about his experience as a victim of domestic violence while in a toxic relationship. In an interview with Punch, he shared how he ignored early warning signs but eventually learned to recognize red flags. “I was in a toxic relationship, and I learned quickly to spot those red flags,” he admitted.
Reflecting on how he handled the domestic violence, Ikeagwu explained, “The fear of God kept me grounded. I remained calm, detached emotionally, and maintained control until the situation calmed down.” He credited his faith for helping him navigate through the difficult experience, saying, “Today, I am much better for it, and I thank God I trusted Him.”
The actor also offered advice on choosing a partner, stressing the importance of shared faith in God. “Find someone who fears God, and make sure you both share the same reverence,” he advised. He also emphasized the significance of family background checks, noting, “A person is the product of the family they come from. A violent family produces a violent individual.”
On the broader issue of toxic relationships, Ikeagwu expressed concern over the rise in domestic violence in Nigeria, despite existing laws. “Raising awareness is crucial, but it won’t be effective unless we address the root causes of violence in society,” he said.
