“If I Weren’t Talented, I’d Have Quit Music Long Ago” – L.A.X Responds to Critics

Nigerian singer Damilola Afolabi, better known by his stage name L.A.X, has addressed ongoing criticism about his talent, making it clear that his longevity in the industry is no accident.
In a recent interview with Guardian Life, the “Caro” hitmaker pushed back against doubters who question his artistry, emphasizing that his consistency and hard work are rooted in real talent—not luck.
“I wake up every day grinding—going to the studio, working, and trying to put out great music,” he said. “If I wasn’t as talented as people think, I would have stopped a long time ago.”
L.A.X first gained national attention in 2013 after signing with Starboy Entertainment and collaborating with Wizkid on the breakout hit “Caro.” Since then, he has carved out a niche for himself with a steady stream of hits and genre-blending sounds that have earned him a loyal fan base.
His comments serve as both a rebuttal to naysayers and a reminder of the resilience it takes to thrive in Nigeria’s highly competitive music scene.
