You Need ₦1.2 Billion to Win a Senate Seat — Ali Baba Lifts the Lid on Nigerian Politics’ Price Tags [VIDEO]

Veteran comedian Ali Baba has pulled back the curtain on the staggering costs of political ambitions in Nigeria, revealing the hefty price tags attached to various political offices.

In a candid interview on the OUTSIDE THE BOX podcast, Ali Baba—who is known for his close connections with Nigerian politicians—laid bare the financial realities fueling the country’s political landscape. According to him, securing a senatorial seat now requires a whopping ₦1.2 billion, while governorship races in some states demand between ₦20 billion to ₦25 billion.

Describing Nigerian politics as a “capital-intensive project,” Ali Baba linked these enormous costs directly to the pervasive corruption crippling the nation.

He also criticized political leaders for neglecting citizens’ needs, focusing instead on projects designed primarily to generate funds they can exploit during election campaigns.

“To win a Senate seat today, you need about ₦1 to ₦2 billion. For a House of Representatives seat, it’s around ₦1 billion. State House of Assembly seats cost roughly ₦500 million. Governorship fees vary widely—about ₦20 billion in Delta State, ₦25 billion in Rivers, and between ₦4 billion to ₦6 billion in some Northern states,” he revealed.

“This capital-heavy system fuels the corruption we see everywhere. Once in office, politicians rarely prioritize education or public welfare—unless these projects can be leveraged for financial gain during elections,” Ali Baba added.

His frank insights shed light on the daunting financial barriers to political participation and the deep-rooted challenges undermining Nigeria’s democracy.
