The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has confirmed that recent flash floods in the state left one person dead and displaced over 2,600 residents across 14 communities.
The agency’s Executive Secretary, Mohammed Goje, disclosed this while assessing the situation in Potiskum Local Government Area, which was among the worst hit after days of heavy rainfall.
He said SEMA, working in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), had begun providing life-saving relief and early recovery support to victims.
Goje explained that more than 600 displaced persons currently taking refuge at Sabon Gari Primary School had already received state government assistance.
The intervention includes daily meals, cash relief, dignity kits, and other essential supplies to help families meet urgent needs for food, shelter, and hygiene.
Meanwhile, the Director-General of NEMA, Zubaida Umar, confirmed that the agency had activated its Maiduguri operations office, which swiftly deployed a rescue team to affected communities.
Preliminary assessments revealed that 21 communities across five wards in Potiskum have been impacted.
The floods destroyed numerous homes, mostly mud structures forcing hundreds of families to flee. Women and children account for the majority of those displaced.
Authorities say efforts are ongoing to expand relief support and prevent further hardship for victims.
