Spain’s World Cup-winning team returned to Madrid on Monday to a grand reception as the country prepared to celebrate their triumph with a victory parade.
La Roja claimed their second men’s World Cup crown after Ferran Torres scored the only goal in extra time to secure a 1-0 win over Argentina at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
The historic victory triggered celebrations across Spain, with thousands of supporters expected to gather along the streets of the capital to welcome the champions and see the trophy.
Argentina, however, arrived back home amid controversy after post-match scenes following the final led FIFA to launch an investigation into the behaviour of some members of the defeated squad.
Football’s governing body will assess the incidents before deciding on any possible disciplinary measures.
The final was goalless after 90 minutes, before Torres struck in the second half of extra time to deliver Spain the title and end Lionel Messi’s hopes of winning another World Cup, in what is likely to be his final appearance at the tournament.
