Kwara United midfielder Mohammed Kabiru has identified a renewed sense of internal cohesion as the primary driver behind the club’s remarkable turnaround in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). The Ilorin-based outfit, popularly known as the “Harmony Boys,” has undergone a significant transformation in form, suffering only a solitary defeat across their previous eight outings in the domestic top flight.
This consistent accumulation of points has proved vital, successfully propelling the team away from the immediate threat of the relegation zone. Their recent momentum was further solidified during a Matchday 35 encounter in Ilorin this past Sunday, where they effectively ended Barau FC’s five-match streak of avoiding defeat. According to Kabiru, this surge in performance stems from a psychological shift within the locker room, as the squad has reclaimed its competitive edge at a critical juncture of the campaign.
Speaking with Owosport, the midfielder explained that the players held a candid internal summit to address their standing and realign their objectives. He noted that the original aspirations for the season involved competing for continental qualification rather than fighting for survival, a realization that prompted a shift in their collective work ethic.
“You know as players, we have to come together as one run together, fight together,” Mohammed remarked. “We had a meeting and decided to fight for each other, Our target at the start of the season was to push for a continental place, not relegation. So we just decided to want it more.”
The commitment to mutual support on the pitch has translated into a more resilient defensive unit and a more clinical attacking threat. As the NPFL season approaches its conclusion, Kwara United’s recent trajectory serves as a testament to the power of squad unity. By prioritizing their shared goals over individual accolades, the Harmony Boys have managed to steer their campaign back toward stability, much to the relief of their supporters in Ilorin.
