Typhoon Dujuan has left at least four people dead and 22 others injured in Japan, while more than 45,000 households remained without electricity after the storm battered areas around Tokyo.
The typhoon moved away from Japan’s coastline and into the Pacific early Tuesday, prompting authorities to lift or downgrade most warnings for heavy rain and landslides. However, search teams continued efforts to locate six people reported missing following landslides triggered by torrential rainfall.
The Fire and Disaster Management Agency said three of the fatalities were recorded in Chiba Prefecture, while another person died in neighbouring Kanagawa Prefecture, both located near Tokyo. More than 460 homes were also reported damaged.
Chiba remained among the worst-affected areas, with over 45,000 households still without power by Tuesday afternoon as emergency crews worked to restore electricity and assess the damage.
Despite weakening as it moved northeast, Dujuan dumped exceptionally heavy rain across parts of the Tokyo region. Oshima Island, about 120 kilometres south of central Tokyo, recorded 832 millimetres of rainfall over 48 hours — more than twice the area’s average rainfall for the entire month of September.
Tokyo’s Edogawa Ward also recorded a record 282.5 millimetres of rain in a 24-hour period.
The storm had already disrupted activities in the capital, forcing the early closure of one of the world’s largest video game trade fairs. Other typhoons this season have also affected events at the Asian Games being hosted in Japan.
Japan regularly experiences powerful typhoons during late summer and early autumn, while scientists warn that human-driven climate change is increasing the intensity of extreme rainfall by allowing a warmer atmosphere to hold more moisture.
