Trump Welcomes King Charles III to White House in High-Profile State Visit

United States President, Donald Trump, welcomed King Charles III in Washington on Tuesday, using the occasion to emphasise continued U.S.–UK cooperation despite recent tensions.

Speaking during a ceremonial White House reception marked by a 21-gun salute and full military pageantry, Trump said the United States and Britain remain bound by one of the world’s closest alliances, even as disagreements persist over international security issues involving Iran.

He noted that since the era of American independence, the two nations had maintained deep ties, adding that the visit coincided with the 250th anniversary of the United States declaring freedom from British rule. He described the relationship as enduring, saying both countries have consistently found ways to work together in moments of global uncertainty.

Reaffirming a phrase long associated with U.S.–UK diplomacy, Trump referred to the “special relationship” between the two countries, expressing hope that it would continue well into the future.

In a notable contrast to earlier criticisms of Britain’s defence posture, he praised the UK military and its cooperation with American forces, stating that both nations have historically worked best when aligned, despite previously questioning aspects of Britain’s naval strength.

The event concluded with a flyover of US fighter jets above the White House, watched by Trump, King Charles, Queen Camilla, and First Lady, Melania Trump.

The visit continues over several days, with King Charles expected to deliver a historic address to the U.S. Congress. He is set to become the first British monarch to do so since Queen Elizabeth II in 1991.

In his speech, the King is expected to call for reconciliation and stronger transatlantic unity, stressing shared democratic values and the importance of cooperation in maintaining global stability.

The state visit began with a more informal reception, where the presidential couple hosted the royal guests for tea and light refreshments before touring parts of the White House grounds, including its beehives.

However, the diplomatic tone of the visit comes amid tensions linked to disagreements over the Iran conflict, which has recently strained relations between Washington and London.
