The Borno State Police Command has confirmed that calm has been restored in Maiduguri following multiple improvised explosive device (IED) attacks in the city.
In a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, the explosions occurred at three locations; the Maiduguri Monday Market, the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) gate, and the Post Office Flyover.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the attacks were carried out by suspected suicide bombers.
According to the Command, 23 people lost their lives, while 108 others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Security operatives, including Police Tactical Units, the military, and other joint teams, were immediately deployed to the affected areas, which were subsequently secured, cordoned off, and swept by the Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit to prevent further threats.
The Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, carried out an on-the-spot assessment and commiserated with victims and their families, assuring residents of the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
Emergency responders, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), evacuated the injured to nearby medical facilities, where they are currently receiving treatment.
Residents have been urged to remain calm and vigilant, and to report any suspicious activity to security agencies.
