A 43-year-old Swiss man has surrendered to police and admitted carrying out a shooting at a rave in Aarau that left one person dead and six others injured.
Police said the suspect turned himself in at a station in Delémont, about 53 kilometres from Aarau, a day after the attack. He was arrested after voluntarily reporting to authorities as investigators searched for him and his vehicle.
Authorities said there was no indication that the suspect had accomplices, with investigators strongly linking him to the shooting and believing he acted alone.
The suspect has not been publicly named in accordance with Swiss privacy laws.
Police recovered three firearms from his vehicle, including an AK-74 Kalashnikov assault rifle and two handguns. Investigators found that the assault rifle and one of the pistols were used during the attack.
More than 100 people were attending the rave when the gunman allegedly opened fire indiscriminately, discharging more than 40 rounds into the crowd.
He later returned to the parking area after leaving the venue and fired additional shots with a handgun, including at a vehicle that was attempting to flee the scene.
A 22-year-old Italian woman was killed, while six others were injured. Two victims remained hospitalised, although their conditions were reported to be improving.
Prosecutors said investigators had identified possible indications of mental health difficulties involving the suspect. Police, however, found no evidence so far of an ideological or extremist motive.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the suspect’s background are continuing.
