Seven Killed as Helicopter Carrying Six Tourists Crashes in Northern Kenya

Seven people, including six tourists and a pilot, have been killed after a helicopter crashed near Mount Ololokwe in Samburu County, northern Kenya.

The fatal incident occurred at about 9:13 a.m. local time on Wednesday, August 19, in a remote and rugged area of the popular safari region.

The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) confirmed that a helicopter accident had occurred in Samburu County, identifying the aircraft as a Eurocopter EC130 B4. The aircraft was operating a flight between the Loisaba area and the Ewaso Nyiro region, which borders the Samburu National Reserve.

A preliminary police report cited by Reuters said seven people were aboard the helicopter at the time of the crash—six tourists and the pilot. All seven were subsequently reported dead.

The nationalities of the tourists had not been officially disclosed at the time of reporting. Luxury safari operator &Beyond also confirmed that the aircraft was carrying its guests when the crash occurred near Mount Ololokwe.

The crash took place in a difficult-to-access section of Samburu, complicating rescue and recovery efforts. Emergency teams, including personnel from the Kenya Red Cross, were deployed to the area as authorities began efforts to reach the wreckage and secure the scene. Reports from the site indicated that fire and the rugged terrain further hampered the operation.

Mount Ololokwe is a prominent landmark in northern Kenya and lies within a region known for wildlife tourism and luxury safari experiences. The helicopter flight was part of travel activity connecting safari destinations in the area.

Authorities have yet to establish what caused the aircraft to crash. An investigation has been launched by Kenya’s aviation authorities to determine the circumstances leading to the accident.

The tragedy is the latest fatal aviation accident to hit Kenya’s tourism sector, where helicopters are frequently used to transport visitors between remote wildlife conservancies and safari lodges.

As investigations continue, authorities are expected to examine the aircraft’s condition, flight path, weather conditions, operational records and other factors that may have contributed to the crash.

The identities and nationalities of the victims are expected to be formally confirmed by the relevant authorities and their representatives as recovery and investigative operations continue.
