Lawmakers move to investigate the institution’s management and compliance with NUC regulations as the Senate pushes for tighter oversight of Nigeria’s university system.
The Senate has ordered a probe into Tansian University, Umunya, Anambra State, following allegations of administrative misconduct and possible breaches of regulations governing university operations.
The investigation was initiated after Senator Victor Umeh raised concerns about the institution’s alleged failure to follow established regulatory procedures, particularly in matters involving the appointment and dismissal of personnel.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio directed the Senate Committee on Tertiary Education and TETFund to examine the allegations and submit its findings within two weeks.
Akpabio emphasised the need for stronger enforcement of standards by the National Universities Commission (NUC), noting that all public and private universities must operate within the law. He said the National Assembly had a responsibility to support the commission in ensuring compliance across the country’s higher education sector.
He further stated that where investigations establish violations of the law, the National Assembly could recommend appropriate measures to the President, including the proscription of an institution where legally warranted.
The development comes as the Senate considers an executive bill seeking to repeal the National Universities Commission Act 2026 and establish a more comprehensive framework for regulating university education.
Presented by Senate Chief Whip Tahir Munguno, the bill proposes expanded enforcement powers for the NUC, updated minimum academic standards, improved accreditation procedures and measures to bring Nigerian universities closer to global best practices.
It also provides for sanctions against institutions that violate regulatory requirements and reaffirms the NUC’s position as the country’s principal authority for academic programme accreditation.
Lawmakers say stronger regulation is crucial to safeguarding academic standards, promoting research and innovation, and ensuring that Nigerian universities remain competitive internationally.
The Tansian University investigation has been referred to the Senate Committee on Tertiary Education and TETFund, which is expected to report back within two weeks, while the proposed NUC legislation advances through the Senate.
