Senate Establishes Ad Hoc Committee to Organize National Security Summit Amid Escalating Insecurity

In a decisive move to address Nigeria’s mounting security challenges, the Senate has approved the formation of an ad hoc committee tasked with organizing a two-day national security summit in Abuja.

The summit aims to develop actionable strategies to combat terrorism, insurgency, and other pervasive security threats across the nation.

The resolution followed a motion sponsored by Senator Jimoh Ibrahim (APC-Ondo South), who highlighted the escalating global insecurity, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict, as factors influencing domestic security concerns.

Ibrahim emphasized that insecurity has become widespread, affecting both urban and rural areas, with issues such as banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism undermining national stability.

He called for a comprehensive, empirical approach to national security, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to peace and safety under the “Renewed Hope Agenda.”

During the plenary session, Senate President Godswill Akpabio affirmed that the summit would include representatives from the federal government, all 36 state governments, local government councils, traditional rulers, community leaders, student bodies, and security experts.

The objective is to foster a holistic dialogue that integrates diverse perspectives and expertise to formulate a unified national security framework.

Despite previous security summits yielding limited tangible outcomes, proponents argue that a more inclusive and action-oriented approach could lead to meaningful reforms.

The summit is expected to produce a National Security Action Document to guide legislative and operational strategies, focusing on emerging threats, intelligence sharing, and community-based security models.

The Senate has directed the newly established ad hoc committee to commence preparations immediately, underscoring the urgency of addressing Nigeria’s security concerns through collaborative and effective measures.
