U.S. Raises Saudi Arabia Travel Alert to Level 3 Amid Rising Iranian Missile and Drone Threats
The United States has tightened its travel warning for Saudi Arabia, urging Americans to reconsider non-essential travel amid continued security concerns linked to the conflict with Iran and the risk of missile and drone attacks targeting American interests.
The U.S. Department of State’s latest advisory, issued on September 15, maintains Saudi Arabia at Level 3, Reconsider Travel, citing the threat of Iranian drone and missile strikes, armed conflict, terrorism, exit bans and strict local laws governing social media activity.
Washington says Iran has launched missiles and drones into Saudi Arabia, with attacks reported against cities, infrastructure, airports, military installations, diplomatic facilities and energy sites. It also warns that debris from intercepted missiles and drones could pose additional risks, particularly around military and energy infrastructure.
The advisory singles out areas along the Saudi-Yemen border, where the U.S. has issued a separate Level 4, Do Not Travel, warning because of the threat of terrorism and attacks by armed groups operating from Yemen. U.S. government personnel are also subject to additional movement restrictions in parts of the kingdom.
Beyond the regional security threat, Washington is warning Americans about legal risks in Saudi Arabia, including exit bans that can prevent individuals from leaving the country over certain civil, criminal, financial or family-related disputes.
The State Department also cautions that social media activity considered critical, offensive or disruptive by Saudi authorities could result in detention or prosecution under local laws.
While commercial flights remain operational, the advisory notes that regional air travel has experienced significant disruption amid the ongoing conflict.
The U.S. is urging its citizens in Saudi Arabia to remain vigilant, monitor official security updates and local media, and maintain contingency plans in case conditions deteriorate.
