Four people have been killed and another injured in a deadly early-morning crash on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.
The accident occurred at about 4 a.m. on Wednesday near Straight Gate School, Ipara Remo, along the Ibadan-bound section of the highway.
Eight people were involved in the crash, which involved a blue Mitsubishi Canter truck, registration number FGE 753 XA, and an ash-coloured HOWO truck with registration number T-695 KT.
The Ogun State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps says the Mitsubishi driver was travelling at high speed when he attempted to overtake the moving HOWO truck, before crashing into it.
According to the FRSC, preliminary findings point to speeding and wrongful overtaking as the main causes of the crash, while driver fatigue was also identified as a contributing factor.
The command’s spokesperson, Chief Route Commander Afolabi Odunsi, said four male adults died in the crash, while another sustained injuries. Three others escaped unhurt.
The FRSC rescue team received the distress call at about 4:33 a.m. and arrived at the scene six minutes later. The injured victim was evacuated to Victory Hospital in Ogere for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to the FOS Mortuary in Ipara.
The two vehicles were subsequently handed over to the Police Motor Traffic Division in Isara for further investigation.
Ogun State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, has urged motorists to avoid speeding, driving while fatigued and dangerous overtaking, particularly during early-morning journeys.
He also advised motorists travelling long distances to get adequate rest before setting out and to overtake only when road conditions make it safe and permissible.
