Reno Omokri’s Long Wait Ends as Mexico Approves Ambassadorial Post

In a major breakthrough for his long-awaited diplomatic posting, Reno Omokri has secured Mexico’s approval to serve as Nigeria’s ambassador, clearing a key hurdle in his appointment.

Omokri announced the development on Tuesday, revealing that the Chargé d’Affaires of the Mexican Embassy in Abuja, José Manuel Briseño Flores, had formally delivered the agrément confirming Mexico’s acceptance of his nomination.

Beyond Mexico, Omokri’s diplomatic responsibilities will extend to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, where he will represent Nigeria under concurrent accreditation.

President Bola Tinubu nominated Omokri for an ambassadorial position in November 2025, alongside other prominent figures, including former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode and former Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman Mahmood Yakubu. The Senate confirmed the nominees in December 2025.

In March 2026, Tinubu approved the deployment of 65 ambassadors-designate and high commissioners to their respective countries, with Omokri assigned to Mexico City.

However, his deployment remained on hold pending formal approval from the Mexican government, a mandatory step in the diplomatic appointment process.

In August, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed that Mexico and Japan were yet to grant approval for two outstanding ambassadorial postings. The ministry said discussions were ongoing to secure the necessary diplomatic clearances.

Omokri had previously dismissed claims that Mexico rejected his appointment, attributing the delay to diplomatic procedures and preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which Mexico is co-hosting with the United States and Canada.

The approval, known diplomatically as agrément, is the formal consent a host country grants before a foreign government’s nominee can assume an ambassadorial role.

A former media aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Omokri is widely known for his political commentary and outspoken interventions in Nigeria’s public affairs.
