Onobiren Wraps Cinematic Run with ₦138.1m, Sets New Nollywood Records

Onobiren has concluded its cinema run on a high note, delivering a strong box office performance and setting multiple milestones within Nigeria’s film industry.

After seven weeks in theatres, the film grossed ₦138.1 million, positioning it among the standout Nollywood releases of 2026. It gained early traction, topping the West African box office for two consecutive weeks and emerging as the highest-earning film released in March 2026.

The film’s commercial momentum was evident from the outset, crossing the ₦100 million mark within just three weeks of release—an achievement that signalled its broad audience appeal.

Beyond revenue, Onobiren has carved out a place in Nollywood history. It ranks as the highest-grossing film centred on women, the top-performing South-South production, and the leading faith-based film at the box office. The project also marks a notable achievement for a producer without an acting background.

Audience reception has matched its commercial success. The film currently holds a 9.1 rating on IMDb and is listed among the top three Nollywood titles of the year.

Executive producer and writer Laju Iren credited the film’s success to collective support from audiences and industry stakeholders.

She acknowledged the role of cinema operators, media coverage, critics, and viewers, noting the strong turnout from women and the broader audience base that backed the project.

Looking ahead, Onobiren is set to reach a wider audience through virtual screenings scheduled from May 1 to May 5, extending its run beyond traditional cinemas.

Its performance reflects both the growing appetite for Nigerian stories and the potential for locally produced films to achieve commercial and cultural impact at scale.
