Veteran Yoruba actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has been laid to rest in his hometown of Ilaro, Ogun State, following his death at the age of 66.
The actor’s remains were buried on Monday, August 24, in accordance with Islamic rites, drawing family members, friends, residents and prominent figures from the Yoruba film industry to Ilaro.
The final rites followed funeral prayers held at the Asade Agunloye Pavilion Ground in Ilaro.
Among those who attended were veteran actors Yinka Quadri, Jide Kosoko, Fausat Balogun, Toyosi Adesanya and Femi Adebayo, who joined mourners in paying their final respects to their longtime colleague.
The atmosphere in Ilaro was marked by grief as colleagues and relatives gathered to honour the actor, whose career spanned more than four decades and established him as one of the familiar faces of Yoruba-language cinema.
Quadri, one of Ogogo’s longtime colleagues, was visibly emotional during the burial, while other members of the industry also struggled to contain their grief.
Ogogo died on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at about 3:00 p.m., according to an announcement by Jide Kosoko. He was 66.
His death came after a battle with stage-four cancer, with his daughters, Kira and Lima Taiwo, publicly seeking medical assistance for their father in the days preceding his death.
The actor’s remains were subsequently taken to Ilaro ahead of the burial arrangements announced by Kosoko.
Ogogo’s passing has triggered widespread mourning across the entertainment industry, with colleagues, government officials and fans paying tribute to his contribution to Nigerian cinema and Yoruba culture.
After more than four decades in the industry and hundreds of film appearances, Ogogo leaves behind a legacy that made him one of the recognisable figures in Yoruba cinema.
