The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has expressed deep sorrow following the death of veteran sports administrator Abba Yola.
NOC President Habu Ahmed Gumel, in a statement released on Tuesday on behalf of the Nigerian Olympic family, described Yola as a dedicated public servant and a key figure in the advancement of sports in Nigeria. The committee extended its heartfelt condolences to Yola’s family and the wider sports community.
“Abba Yola was more than just a passionate sports official. He was a pillar in Nigeria’s sporting landscape and a devoted public servant who gave his all to the development of athletics and football,” the statement said.
Yola held several significant positions in Nigeria’s sports administration throughout his career, including Chairman of Kano Pillars Football Club and a staff member of the now-defunct Federal Ministry of Sports.
He also served as Chief of Staff to former Sports Minister Chief Sunday Dare and as Special Assistant to the former Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Dr. Patrick Ekeji.
Over the years, Yola was appointed to many special committees where his efforts had a lasting impact on sports policy and development.
Gumel noted Yola’s calm and respectful demeanor, which helped him forge strong, enduring relationships. He also highlighted Yola’s distinguished sense of style and grace, reflecting the true gentleman he was.
The NOC described Yola’s passing as a significant loss to Kano State and the entire Nigerian sports fraternity, urging all to reflect on his life of service and dedication.
