Nigeria, Morocco Share Points in Goalless U-20 AFCON Clash

Nigeria were held to a goalless draw by Morocco in a tense Group B encounter at the ongoing CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Cairo on Sunday.

The match rekindled memories of their dramatic 2005 semi-final clash, where Nigeria triumphed on penalties after a 2-2 draw. This time, both sides battled hard but lacked the cutting edge to find the back of the net.

The fixture marked Nigeria’s 99th appearance in U-20 AFCON history. Despite dominating stretches of the game, the Flying Eagles couldn’t clinch what would have been their 57th win in the tournament.

After opening their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Tunisia, Aliyu Zubairu’s squad aimed to secure back-to-back wins for the first time since 2015. However, Morocco stood firm, effectively shutting down Nigeria’s attacking options.

Captain Daniel Bameyi delivered a standout performance in defence, recording the most touches (75) and completing 59 passes with a 72.9% success rate. His leadership ensured goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt had a quiet outing, as Morocco failed to register a shot on target.

The game was marked by physical duels, tactical fouls, and frequent injury stoppages. Morocco lost Othmane Maamma to injury in added time, while Nigeria’s Divine Oliseh and Clinton Jephta also sustained knocks.

Israel Ayuma, Divine Oliseh, and Emmanuel Chukwu came closest to scoring for Nigeria, but none could convert their chances — Ayuma firing wide in stoppage time and Chukwu heading over earlier.

The match grew scrappy, with several players booked. Nigeria’s Rickson Mendos and Clinton Jephta saw yellow for rough tackles, joined by Morocco’s Hossam Essadak and Hamza Koutoune.

Despite the draw, Nigeria extended their unbeaten record in second group games to five (W3 D2), having last lost such a fixture in 2011 against Cameroon.

Group B remains finely balanced, with Nigeria and Morocco tied on four points — one ahead of Tunisia. The Flying Eagles will face winless Kenya in their final group game at Cairo’s 30 June Stadium, while Morocco takes on Tunisia in a must-win tie in Ismailia.
