Nigeria has achieved a historic milestone in its power sector by generating 5,801 megawatts of electricity on Tuesday, the highest ever recorded in the country, despite ongoing challenges with frequent power outages.
The head of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Sule Abdulaziz shared this achievement at the State House in Abuja on Thursday.
“For the first time in our nation’s history, the power sector recorded a new and unprecedented peak generation of 5,801.84 megawatts of electricity on March 4, 2025, at 21:15 hours,” Abdulaziz stated.
He also confirmed that TCN successfully transmitted all of the generated electricity to the appropriate distribution load centers across the country.
Although Nigeria’s electricity generation and distribution companies are privately owned following the sector’s privatization, the state-run TCN remains responsible for transmitting the generated power to distribution companies.
