Nigeria will face El Salvador in the 2027 Davis Cup World Group II Playoffs after suffering a 4-0 defeat to Morocco in Rabat.
The result ended Nigeria’s World Group II campaign, but the team retains an opportunity to remain in the second tier through the playoffs, scheduled for February 5-7, 2027.
Morocco secured the tie at the Railway Club courts on Sunday, September 20, taking an unassailable 2-0 lead on the opening day.
Karim Bennani defeated Canice Abua 6-1, 6-2 in the opening singles before Yassine Dlimi beat Yusuf Abubakar by the same scoreline.
The hosts completed the victory on the second day when Younes Lalami and Dlimi defeated Nigeria’s Michael Emmanuel and Abubakar 6-3, 6-2 in the doubles.
Amine Jamji then completed Morocco’s clean sweep with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Emmanuel in the reverse singles.
Nigeria had secured promotion to World Group II in February after defeating Uzbekistan 3-1 at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club in Onikan, marking the country’s highest-ever position in the Davis Cup.
The team, however, was weakened ahead of the Morocco tie by Adeleye’s injury withdrawal and Seun Ogunsakin’s decision to pull out over conditioning concerns.
Adeleye had played a key role in Nigeria’s victory over Uzbekistan.
Nigeria will now prepare for the playoff against El Salvador as they bid to retain their place in World Group II.
