The Nigeria Football Federation and Canadian club AFC Toronto have condemned racist attacks directed at Super Falcons midfielder Esther Okoronkwo following a social media backlash after money belonging to the player was stolen at Nigeria’s team hotel in Morocco.
The incident occurred during the Super Falcons’ participation at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, where a hotel employee allegedly stole cash belonging to Okoronkwo.
Moroccan authorities later arrested the suspect, recovered the stolen funds, returned them to the player and sentenced the offender to six months in prison.
However, Okoronkwo faced racist comments and monkey emojis online after speaking out about the incident, leading to strong reactions from the NFF and AFC Toronto.
In separate statements shared on their X accounts on Monday, both organisations described the abuse as unacceptable and expressed their support for the Nigeria international.
The NFF stated that racism and discrimination have no place in football or society, condemning the online attacks against the Super Falcons forward.
