A new chapter has begun in British politics as Andy Burnham assumes office as the United Kingdom’s prime minister, promising a long-term plan to rebuild the economy, ease cost-of-living pressures and restore public confidence in government.
Burnham took over from Keir Starmer after being formally appointed by King Charles III at Buckingham Palace. Shortly after moving into 10 Downing Street, the 56-year-old began reshaping his government, removing some of Starmer’s allies and announcing changes to key cabinet positions.
In his first address as prime minister, Burnham said Britain must “regain stability” and pledged to create “a new political model” while building a stronger economy. He also promised to unveil a 10-year national plan focused on re-industrialising the country, expanding public housing and addressing rising living costs.
The new prime minister also held early talks with United States President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, reaffirming Britain’s commitment to defence and security as well as continued support for Ukraine.
Burnham, a former mayor of Greater Manchester popularly known as the “King of the North,” said his government would focus on giving people “breathing space” from economic pressures and tackling issues such as homelessness.
The new government faces major challenges, including a sluggish economy, high public debt, rising welfare costs and migration pressures that have boosted support for the right-wing Reform UK party.
