Stakeholders now have additional time to contribute to the proposed National Policing Bill, following an extension announced by the Presidential Working Group handling the reform.
The new deadline for submitting memoranda and position papers is Friday, August 21, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. West Africa Time.
The extension, announced by the Chief of Staff to the President and Chairman of the Working Group, Femi Gbajabiamila, is aimed at allowing more individuals, institutions and organisations to make detailed contributions to the proposed legislation.
Legal practitioners, civil society groups, security professionals, state governments, academics, professional bodies and members of the public are among those invited to participate in the consultation.
Submissions are to be made through the official National Policing Bill portal before the revised deadline.
The proposed law is expected to establish a comprehensive framework for policing in Nigeria, covering areas such as funding, recruitment and training, command structures, operational jurisdiction, inter-agency cooperation and accountability.
The Working Group also says the legislation will include safeguards against political interference and abuse while strengthening the protection of citizens’ rights.
According to the group, broad stakeholder participation is necessary to produce a policing framework that is effective, sustainable and responsive to the security needs of communities across the country.
The Working Group is expected to submit a final draft of the Executive Bill package to President Bola Tinubu for review on September 3, 2026, before its onward legislative processing.
