Chief of Staff to the President and Chairman of the Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill, Femi Gbajabiamila, says the group remains on schedule to deliver the proposed legislation within its seven-week workplan.
Gbajabiamila made this known as the extended deadline for Nigerians and stakeholders to submit memoranda and position papers on the proposed bill closes on Friday, August 21, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. WAT.
Since its inauguration, the Working Group has moved from its initial organisational phase into substantive policy and legislative work, with legal drafters already undertaking the first drafting sprint of the proposed National Policing Bill.
The Policy Advisory Committee, chaired by retired Justice Mohammed Abdullahi Liman, has also been constituted and completed the first phase of its oversight responsibilities, providing policy direction for the drafting process.
Legal drafters nominated by the Federal Ministry of Justice have commenced work in line with the approved timetable, while the parallel national consultation has attracted submissions from government institutions, professional bodies, civil society organisations, security stakeholders, experts and members of the public.
Gbajabiamila said submissions received during the consultation are being systematically reviewed and analysed, with relevant recommendations and stakeholder perspectives expected to inform the development of the bill.
The Working Group is expected to continue with the remaining stages of consultation, drafting and review as it works towards meeting the milestones outlined in its seven-week programme.
